Not permitted are most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients, or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Organic meat, poultry eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests choosing a diet containing 30 percent or less of calories from fat, and less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fatty acids.
